Dr Ashan Gunarathne

Dr Dr Ashan Gunarathne is an Honorary Assistant Professor and Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH), specialising in advanced coronary and structural heart interventions. He is committed to delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care tailored to each patient’s individual needs.

Having completed his cardiology training in the East Midlands, Dr Gunarathne undertook advanced fellowship training in complex coronary and structural procedures, including chronic total occlusions (CTO), transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO), and patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure. Alongside his clinical work, he completed a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at the University of Birmingham and has published extensively in leading peer-reviewed journals.

At NUH, Dr Gunarathne has played a key role in developing innovative interventional cardiology services and currently leads the Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion (LAAO) programme and involved in Mitral TEER. Program as an operator treating patients with leaky heart valves. He has provided expertises in coronary Interventions and other structural interventions at National as well as International level as speaker and a panelist. He is also actively involved in medical education as Clinical Lead for the Undergraduate Cardiology Programme at the University of Nottingham.

With over 2,000 coronary and structural procedures performed, Dr Gunarathne has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating conditions such as chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, angina, atrial fibrillation, and heart failure.

He offers a comprehensive, patient-centred approach, taking time to explain conditions clearly and guide patients through their treatment options with confidence and reassurance. Dr Gunarathne is a keen researcher and has contributed many clinical national and international cardiology clinical trials as a local principal investigator. He is affiliated to the University of Nottingham as an associate professor in Cardiology .He is an author of more than fifty publications and book chapters and has delivered academic lecturers in both national and international conferences and eager to continue and expand research in Nottingham..
